Maybe I misunderstood things, but I thought the protagonist was supposed to be immutable, stagnation. Then why do we keep changing? Even between a single story?

A small piece of the Shambling Mound is within you.
I don't get the impression that the protagonist is supposed to be immutable.
My read is that the protagonist is space / silence / nothingness - he is the canvas on which everything else is drawn. His relationship with change is subtle. On a superficial level, he changes a lot with everything that happens to him, much like one painting is completely different from another. On a deeper level... perhaps he can shrug off those changes, because after all the canvas is not the painting.

I thought the whole point was that he was immutable.
The fact he would be responsible for creating a world without death, that he is an observer and throughout his observations and beliefs he would change the princess who is the harbinger of change. I thought he was supposed to be a sort of stagnant for that ground things to what they are.
But throughout the game he keeps changing, not physically, the princess says in multiple paths he always looks the same, but he sort of change HOW he sees the princess and this reality? I don't know, I'm still trying to grasp the concept of the voices in his head because they DO give him power too and change him in a way, like the Stubborn voice is pretty much Guts from Berserk who just won't back down.

he exists in duality with entropy and thus decays and shifts (much as the princess who is entropy incarnate still remains in many ways static, as she exists in duality with order)
one cannot continue existing as they do without the other. order's mission here is to slay chaos such that chaos ceases to exist within itself.
His body is a construct, that grows as his marches towards fully awakening as well, like her he just stirred to being a little bit before she did. He bloats, then as his body fails as his consciousness expands towards awakening. Remeber his body is'nt a real him it's a shell created by the narrator's creator to house a peice of him to slay the princess/shifting mound. Now after the very end he can remake a new form that can contain himself, (the stranger ending/the leaving togeather ending. But also remeber the shifting mound and the protagonist were the same being, before being split in two, they have a little peice of each other in themselves. This also explains their endless dance.
Well the Princess/Shifty is still alive for the bulk of the story, for one thing. Since she's still around change and entropy continues to happen, and that affects Quiet as much as anything else.
Beyond that, it's said that a part of Her is within you (and a part of you is within Her), and the Narrator seems to think that this is significant enough that even the world without Her wouldn't be *completely* stagnant.
